About Us

Incorporated on April 11, 1898, the City of Stamps was first known as a lumber town, taking its name from one of its earliest settlers, Hardy James Stamps. The city sits within Lafayette County and is the most populous (pop. 1,214) city within the county. It is the childhood home of world-renowned author and poet, Dr. Maya Angelou. In 2014, the City of Stamps renamed Lake June Park to Dr. Maya Angelou Memorial Park in her honor. Angelou, autobiographical novel, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, is partially set in Stamps.
